Two-year-old grandson dies after eating a type of candy, grandmother collapses in tears after hearing doctor’s explanation
Recently, Dr. Ye Ting, head of the ICU at Zhejiang University Children’s Hospital in China, shared the case of a 2-year-old boy he had treated.
The boy was rushed to the hospital by his grandmother, blue-skinned and unconscious. According to the grandmother, before the incident, she had given her grandson some chewy cheese sticks. The boy liked them so much he ate them quickly and then choked.

A piece of chewy cheese got stuck in the child’s airway, causing him to be unable to breathe. Grandma tried to help by performing the Heimlich Maneuver to push the foreign object out of the airway, but it was unsuccessful.
She quickly called an ambulance and took her grandson to the hospital, but when they arrived, the green boy was unconscious and unresponsive.
Doctors were able to remove the blockage. But the boy remained in critical condition and had to be admitted to the ICU. The grandmother waited in hope throughout the night. However, the next morning, the boy was gone forever.
Dr. Ye Ting explained that the boy had been without oxygen for a long time. Which caused severe damage to his brain and deprived him of oxygen.
“Asphyxial airway obstruction due to foreign body is a common cause of death in our intensive care unit. Round, slippery, chewy or sticky foods. Such as cream cheese sticks, jelly, grapes, and nuts and seeds have a high chance of entering the airway and causing airway obstruction,” said Dr. Yeh Ting.
When she heard the news of her grandson’s death and the doctor’s explanation, the grandmother collapsed in tears. She was deeply saddened that she had given her grandson the chewy cheese sticks, which led to the tragedy.
“At that time, I wanted to tell my grandmother that the child was safe. But the miracle didn’t happen,” Dr. Ye Ting said sadly.
Dr. Ye Ting said that cases of children dying from choking on foreign objects and suffocating are not uncommon. Most recently, on March 28, Chinese media reported a tragic incident in Jiangsu Province. Where a 2-year-old boy died after eating a chewy cheese stick.
